I have studied English with many teachers but the sessions I have had with Barney Griffiths are the ones that helped me to improve most. I met Barney Griffiths in 2013, when I took a course entitled ‘Teaching in English’ at the University of Girona. As a student, I appreciated his advice, his British humour, and how he focused on the importance of good pronunciation when we communicate our ideas in English. Barney Griffiths’ coaching has helped my teaching in the following areas: time management (projecting time needed to do tasks); grading; efficiency in planning; having confidence in my own knowledge and skills; designing small tasks - suggestions for how to implement effective short tasks and activities in the classroom; giving clear instructions and examples or models for tasks; and making students do the work while I act as a consultant expert, in line with the blended learning and flipped classroom approaches. A colleague at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and myself worked with Barney on the English translation of an article in which we presented a qualitative analysis of the jokes narrated within the framework of focus groups. The goal was to conduct a sociological analysis of the types of bonds generated between group participants through the association of different jokes. The translation work was complex; the subject matter required that the translator have a certain degree of familiarization with various disciplines in the social sciences: sociology, psychoanalysis, linguistics, etc. Barney’s work was beyond our expectations: the publishers of the SCOPUS indexed Journal of Humour Research, where the article was published, never mentioned the need to revise any of the translation work. If I need to, I will not hesitate to use the translation services Barney offers again.
